With more than 20 performances of new plays in one week, the National Play Festival is a feast of Australian theatre with something to sample for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Tuck into a Play for Breakfast, see Australia’s best new scripts come to life in the Showcase season, and discover the formula for the Bestest Play in Australia. The National Play Festival presents first-look performances of brand new plays hot from the rehearsal room. You might see actors still reading from their scripts, you won’t see any sets or costumes, but you will definitely see the freshest, most exciting theatre being crafted, molded and brought to life before your eyes.

19 Trains - Funny and acute, a play about endurance and the unlikely prospect of happiness from Melbourne actor and writer, Angus Cerini. Wednesday 17th, 8pm.
Student Body - Based on extensive interviews with international students, this is a provocative and theatrical study of learning and difference. By Alana Valentine. Thurs 18th, 8pm.
Tilt - A captivating and disturbing vision of the future, this play by novelist, playwright and director Catherine McKinnon is a theatrical puzzle for audiences to put together. By Catherine McKinnon. Fri 19th, 9pm.
The New Black - Written with caustic wit and a wicked desire to ruin his characters’ lives, The New Black is a vicious laugh-out-loud modern urban comedy. By Robert Reid. Sat 20th, 9pm.
Beautiful Gesture - Ross Mueller (Concussion) returns to the National Play Festival with a delicate, vertiginous exploration of people connecting against a backdrop of terror. Wed 17th, 3pm and Fri 19th, 7pm.
Water Falling Down - This is a charming, poignant and closely observed portrait of paternal love, a celebration of the small moments of connection between father and son, and Mark Swivel's first play in over 15 years. Wed 17th, 5pm and Fri 19th, 4pm.
Marzipan - Debra Oswald (Dags, Mr Bailey’s Minder, The Peach Season) writes with grace and humanity about real people in this life-affirming romantic comedy in which love and death are great partners. Thurs 18th, 3pm and Sat 20th, 7pm.
War Crimes - A razor-sharp depiction of adolescence by one of our most exciting up-and-coming talents who continues to push the boundaries of theatre for young audiences. By Angela Betzien. Thurs 18th, 5pm and Sat 20th, 4pm.
